A extensive search and rescue operation is currently in progress in the Caribbean region for a pair of lost sailboats transporting humanitarian supplies traveling from Mexico to Cuba.

Military Search and Rescue Efforts Deployed

Authorities in Mexico has deployed naval assets and military search aircraft to search for the missing boats, which were had on board a minimum of nine crew members, per a military release.

The ships had been projected to arrive in the Cuban capital on Tuesday or Wednesday, but there has been radio silence from them and no confirmation of their safe arrival, the statement clarified.

Context of Humanitarian Support to Cuba

Cuba has leaned on Mexico's over the last several weeks, as the nation grapples with multiple nationwide blackouts.

"The skippers and their teams are seasoned mariners, and both vessels are fitted with proper navigational gear and signalling equipment," a representative involved in the effort said.

The nine individuals on board are citizens of the United States, Cuba, France, and Poland. Mexican authorities said it has established contact with coast guard agencies from each country along with their diplomatic representatives.

"We are co-operating fully with the officials and continue to be hopeful in the ability of the crews to make it to Cuba without incident," the official further stated.

Earlier Aid Shipment

Just days before, the Cuban authorities publicly celebrated and warmly received another boat that had carried 14 tonnes of humanitarian aid to the country.

That boat, dubbed "a new Granma" after the vessel in which Fidel Castro came back to Cuba to begin the revolution in the 1950s, brought solar panels, medicines, infant formula, bikes and foodstuffs.

Larger Geopolitical Climate

Non-governmental organizations and volunteers have primarily led efforts to ship critical assistance to Cuba starting at the turn of the year, a period which saw a oil sanctions on the country came into effect.

The United Nations have since raised alarms about ""critical" shortages of supplies, with in excess of 50,000 surgeries called off in Cuba because of energy rationing.

Foreign policy pressure have been ramped up lately, with statements from various officials emphasizing the delicate state of relations.

Responding to previous statements, a senior official from Cuba stated firmly that "the governance model of Cuba is non-negotiable."

Accounts suggest that initial phases of negotiations had begun, although their present status remains uncertain.

The naval forces said it was committed to using the full extent of its capabilities at its command to discover the vessels and ensure the well-being of the sailors.

As of now, there has been no public statement on the missing boats by the government in Havana.
