Celebratory Celebrations Proceed In Spite of Alerts Edinburgh's renowned Hogmanay festivities are set to take place, a contrast to last year's calling-off. This comes despite weather alerts for snow over northern Scotland. "A chilly New Year's Eve evening for those partying, so warmer clothes will be necessary," said the weather service. Fireworks Under Clear but Cold Skies Elsewhere in the UK, the weather is expected to be perfect for fireworks displays, with dry conditions and open skies. Readings are expected to be cold, so extra layers vital, according to forecasters. Further north, skies will be cloudier, but this is not anticipated to impact visibility for seeing fireworks. "There is no expectation of low cloud, mist or murk, so you will likely be able to see fireworks, just not stars," remarked one forecaster. Broad Snow Warnings for Friday Heading into Friday, advisories are in place across Northern Ireland and stretching from Wales, through the north-west, the West Midlands and all the way to London and the majority of the south-east of England. Transport is expected to be disrupted. Travelers are advised to plan for delays for journeys on the road. Delays and cancellations are likely on trains and buses. Readings Forecast to Drop Further As 2026 begins, it will be "cold regardless of where you are," said forecaster Simon Partridge. Temperatures are set to fall even more as snowfall and high winds are likely to affect the north of the country. Approximately 10cm of snow is expected to have accumulated in some areas by Friday morning, with up to 30cm on the highest roads and hills. Public Health Alerts Activated In addition, serious cold weather health warnings are in force for the north-east and north-west of England. These are set to stay active until noon on 5 January, with temperatures forecast to fall to between 3C and 5C. Authorities said this signified the weather was expected to cause major effects across medical and care provision. This includes a likely increase in the number of deaths among vulnerable individuals or those 65 and older. The advice for all is clear: to see the new year in good health, dressing for the cold is absolutely key.
